James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation”. This year the Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to the fathers of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that stimulates the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer, thus stopping or delaying the growth of cancer cells and preventing the tumour from spreading to other parts of the body.
As the Swedish institute that awards the Nobel Prize states, immunotherapy “has been a revolution in cancer therapy and has changed our vision of this disease forever “. Thanks to immunotherapy, effective treatments have been developed for lung, kidney and skin cancer.
